The Location
St Lucia is situated within the Umkhanyakude District in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The town serves as the gateway to the greater iSimangaliso Wetland region, a globally recognised natural treasure.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and protected under the Ramsar Convention, the park offers a rare combination of beaches, wetlands, lakes, and wildlife.
The area is home to approximately 1,200 Nile crocodiles and nearly 800 hippos, with hippos often seen wandering through town after dark. Wildlife in the region also includes leopard, kudu, black rhino, and an exceptional variety of birdlife.
The region’s human history is equally remarkable. Evidence of early human settlement dating back 130,000 years has been found in caves high in the Lebombo Mountains, where thousands of ancient stone tools have been uncovered.
Today, St Lucia remains one of South Africa’s most unique coastal destinations, offering boat cruises, game drives, turtle tours, pristine beaches, and an unforgettable natural environment.
