Nelspruit, the capital of Mpumalanga, lies in the fertile valley of the Crocodile River and has been called the gateway to Mpumalanga and the Kruger National Park. The Lowveld botanical gardens just outside Nelspruit boasts a rare collection of plant species and the first man-made rain forest which attracts the majority of Nelspruit’s visitors.

Nearby Sudwala caves, a dinosaur park and cultural centre will expose your senses to the most primitive of Africa’s history. A short distance away from Nelspruit is the gold mining town of Kaapsehoop where the mist filled evenings and herds of wild horses grazing in the town will transport you into memories of the past. The mountains in and around Nelspruit provide much in the way of camping and hiking traills with varying levels of intensity.

The Nelspruit Nature Reserve offers several walks through the reserve, lasting from one to six hours. The Green Heritage Hiking Trail offers a pleasant, relaxing way to enjoy the indigenous vegetation, a wide diversity of birds and small antelope. Take a walk along the Nelspruit Historical Walking Trail. Stretching from the Promenade Center to the Civic Center, the one-hour historical route brings interesting facets of Nelspruit’s past to life. Features include a restored ox-wagon in the library gardens.
